Citizens Empowerment through Information Technology - 2010(81) 27-07-2010 The Second Conference-cum-Exhibition on e-Governance being organized by FICCI, Tamil Nadu State Council in association with ELCOT and Tamil Nadu e-Governance Agency on 27th & 28 July 2010 at Chennai Trade Centre, Chennai. Dr Poongothai Aladi Aruna, Hon'ble Minister for Information Technology, Government of Tamil Nadu, Mr P W C Davidar, IAS, Secretary, IT Department, GoTN and Dr Santhosh Babu, IAS, Managing Director, ELCOT & Director, Tamil Nadu e-Governance Agency will speak on the occasion. CeTIT provides an opportunity to take stock of the practice and the promise of digital technologies by drawing together academicians, practitioners and policy makers in the field of electronic governance. It also addresses other important governance issues reflecting present situation and future aspirations.

Commonwealth Express arrives at Central (42) 18-08-2010 The Commonwealth Express, a special exhibition on wheels, showcasing the history of Commonwealth Games (CWG), details of the venues where the events will be held this October and other minute details of the Games, arrived in Chennai Central on Tuesday. Inaugurating the exhibition, Southern Railway Additional General Manager K.K. Srivastava said that to spread awareness about the Games among the public in general and youths in particular, Indian Railways is organising the exhibition. The exhibition, which was flagged off by Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee at Safdarjung Railway Station on June 24, will return to New Delhi on October 2. The train consists of 11 coaches, of which 5 have been allotted to Railway Sports Promotion Board and the remaining to the growth of information technology industry in the country. The first coach gives a brief history of Commonwealth Games and details about the Mascot ‘Shera' and the Queen Baton Relay. The second coach throws light on details of the venues and various games to be played. The third coach displays various sporting events, which have been included in the Games and the venues, where the events are to be held. Photographs of sports icons of the country are displayed in the fourth coach. The contribution of Railways in the development of sports and the list of medals won by railway sportspersons in international events find their place in the fifth coach. Coaches from 6 to 11 tell about different facets of information and communication technology (ICT), each of them dealing with a particular facet. The first coach presents an overview of ICT, how it has impacted the life of common man. It also presents a story of communication over the years from smoke signals in the primitive times to the SMS and e-mails. Efforts taken by the Department of Information Technology and several other organizations in the sphere of ICT, their contribution towards brining ICT to the life of common man are displayed in the second coach. The third coach deals with the impact of ICT in various sectors – social, health, education, agriculture and ecology. The fourth coach presents ICT from the perspective of industries, its key role in the country's economic rise. The theme of the fifth coach revolves around common service centres (CSCs), an initiative to provide a platform to the people to access to various information and services as well as an interface between government agencies and the citizens. The sixth coach has been designed as an auditorium Internet, video conferencing and mobile communications are some of the highlights of the exhibition. The exhibition train willcover around 50 major cities across the country and will be open to the public for three days from August 18. There is no entrance fee for the exhibition and the train is on Platform 11 at Chennai Central, according to Southern Railway officials.

Rural IT Finishing Schools(18) 22-01-2009 A joint session of ELCOT, TAHDCO (The Adi Dravida Housing Development Corporation), FOSTeRA, NASSCOM & SUN iTech was organised on "Rural IT Finishing Schools" in Chennai on 22.01.2009. The project aims to train school droputs in rural districts to become BPO workers. TAHDCO had provided Rs.5 crore, while ELCOT has sought Rs.1 crore in assistance from the Backward Class Welfare Department. While ELCOT will act as co-ordinator, FOSTeRA will provide consultancy and Nasscom, offer the soft skill training. FOSTeRA is a certified rural BPO organisation promoted by the Krishnagiri district administration. Thiru. P.W.C. Davidar, Secretary to Government, Information Technology Department, TN Govt chaired the meeting. Dr. Santhosh Babu IAS, Managing Director, ELCOT, Thiru Dayanand Kataria IAS, Managing Director, TAHDCO, Thiru. K. Purushothaman, Regional Director, NASSCOM, Thiru. M.R. Ashok Kumar, CEO, FOSTeRA, Tmt. Geetha Nagappan, Director, SUNiTech(I) Pvt Ltd were the others who addressed the meeting.
